eBay listings explained

If you visit www.ebay.uk, you will be presented with a huge range of items for sale, from computer games to cars, all organised into various categories. You can browse the various categories or use the search features to find what you're looking for.

Each individual item offered for sale at eBay is called a listing. Each listing appears on it’s own page along with a description of the item for sale, the price (or starting bid if it’s an auction), and various other details such as payment methods offered, delivery details etc.

eBay auctions and fixed price listings

eBay listings can be either an auction format, where buyers compete for the item, or a fixed price listing where you pay a fixed price to purchase the item immediately.

Each ebay listing is created by the seller. The seller is responsible for writing the description, taking photos, setting the price and all the other details. eBay simply provides the platform for people to buy and sell items in a safe environment.

eBay Sellers and Buyers

eBay members are made up of Buyers and Sellers. An ebay Seller is somebody who is offering an item for sale. eBay Sellers range from businesses and companies offering new goods through to millions of individuals who just want to get rid of unwanted items and make a little extra cash. Many eBay members are both Sellers and Buyers.

Sellers pay a small fee for listing an item for sale, plus if the item sells, eBay will earn a small commission. It’s a simple arrangement that has enabled eBay to become the largest online marketplace in the world with hundreds of millions of users.

An eBay Buyer is someone who places a bid on an item, or chooses to purchase an item for a fixed price. eBay is completely free to use for Buyers. You'll need to register with eBay if you want to buy an item. Registration is simple and quick - visit eBay and get started.

eBay feedback - Reputations count

One of the core principles of eBay is Feedback, a valuable indicator of a Buyer or sellers reputation.

Feedback is made up of comments and ratings left by other eBay members you've bought from and sold to. For each transaction, Buyers and Sellers can choose to rate each other by leaving Feedback. Feedback from buyers can consist of a positive, negative or neutral rating, and a short comment. Feedback from Sellers can consist of a positive rating and a short comment.

These ratings are used to determine Feedback scores. Before buying an item on eBay, review the feedback that members have left for a seller. Learning about a seller's past trading experiences will help you decide if this is a person you feel you can trust.
